Standing in beautiful surroundings beside the River Avon, Bath Abbey was originally founded in 676, and it was here, nearly 300 years later, that Edgar was crowned the first

king of all England. The present magnificent building dates mainly from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It was built by the Bishop of Bath and Wells, Oliver King, as a result of a dream in which he heard a voice urging "a king to restore the church". Although the Dissolution of the Monasteries delayed the completion of the Abbey, it was finally finished with the support of Elizabeth I and so became England's last great abbey church. It is particularly noted for the pinnacles and flying buttresses which adorn the outside.
